Split leather

split leather

What is Split Leather

How to split leather or what is split leather? The divided layers of hides are known as split leather. When a calfskin is divided into several layers over the entire surface is called the “Splitting Process”. After the wet blue tanning process, the leather tends to turn thicker than that it was raw. Mostly thicker calfskin like cow and buffalo are likely to go through the splitting process. Those layers are divided in an average thickness of 5mm to 10mm. The divided layers are distinguished as grain split or top-grain split and flesh split. Sometimes, the thickness of the hides is enough for a middle split. The split, divided by the grain split, is also called “drop split”. The drop-split leather is rough on both sides like the back of a leather.

When the tanners adjust the splitting machine they have to consider that the thickness of the skin is higher at this stage due to the water content of the wet skin. The water content of a wet hide is three times heavier than a dry hide. This water content also makes the skin looks a bit thicker. The tanner has to take into account this difference in thickness while adjusting the splitting machine so that the desired thickness of leather can be attained once the leather is dry.

After the splitting process, the top surface is called the upper side and back part is called the flesh side. Outside the tannery, only the flesh side is recognized as the upper split leather.

What is wet blue leather

split wet blue leather

Wet Blue refers to moist chrome-tanned leather. In this process, the leather is tanned, but not dried, dyed nor finished. The bluish coloring is produced by the chrome tanning agent with a chemical (Chromium (III) oxide) which is blue. This chemical makes the leather looks blue.

Nowadays leather is dyed through multiple colors but these sort of dyes have no opacity. The wet blue tanning process is mostly applied all over the world. The wet blue process makes all the rawhide look the same. After the wet blue process, the leather is now ready for split shaving. After split shaving, the leather is re-tanned and ready for dying.

Split Leather

The grain split is considered more valuable. The fiber structure is substantially denser in the upper layer of the grain side which is tear-resistant. The grain split is referred to tanned.

After leaving the tannery, the name "grain split" is no longer used. The leather merchants then tan it according to the type of article they want. On the other hand, the term "split" no longer applied in connection with the grain side. The drop split between the two rough sides is then no longer mention as "flesh split", but only as split or suede leather. In order to make the leather more intelligible, the splitting is an important process.

As the quality of the split leather is less than the top grain leather, there are rules about the usage. But the rules vary from country to country. Some countries don`t allow to finish the split leather, and some allow.

It is unquestionable that a split leather does not have the same quality features as a top-grain leather. If a split leather is finished in such a way that it looks like a grain leather, the client can’t perceive the quality. It’s a kind of disguising the split leather by creating an artificial grain effect and also by embossing.

Applications of Split/ Suede Leather

Alike the upper side or grain side leather split leather are also coated and processed into different articles and applications. Below are some examples of split leather articles.

Leather Clothing

In the clothing sector goat, suede and pork split are much familiar. Pig split leather is normally a bit stiffer and not as tear-resistant as goat suede leather. Therefore, pig split leather is mostly used for low-priced leather clothing.

Leather shoes

When it comes to footwear/shoe sector, suede leather is widely used for sneakers and sports shoes because of its breathability and a soft wet feel. Suede leather is commonly used for

Split finished leather - Laminated split leather

In order to get a feel and look like upper or top grain leather, split leather is finished and coated in different ways. Generally, the split is finished and coated according to the buyer’s requirements or else tanners give a normal coating if they tend to sell it as a stock lot. These are also called laminated split leather.

A new form of coated split leather from 2011 onwards is a split leather which is coated with a textile fabric. The proportion is then 11% other material of the coating and 89% split leather. So far, this material has been named Rodeo, Pilot Leather, and Tasan. The material is mainly named as textile coated split leather. It is not to be offered as genuine leather. But, some countries consider it as a false declaration and correct grounds for complaint.

Embossed split leather

The embossed split leather refers to split leather, which is coated with different types of color layer and embossed with various dices. These split leathers then look like a normal top grain leather. The quality is not so good because the fiber structure of split leather is not like the top grain leather. The strength is less than that a top grain leather or upper leather. But it is quite hard to distinguish a split leather when embossed.
